Toughened glass, also called tempered glass, is heat-treated to make it far stronger than ordinary annealed glass. When specified correctly, it helps protect busy homes and commercial spaces because it breaks into small granular pieces instead of sharp shards.
Overview
Alu-Value helps homeowners, architects and business owners understand where toughened glass is the right choice, where laminated safety glass may be better and how the final glazing should be measured, supplied and installed. With more than 30 years of family-run glass and aluminium experience in Krugersdorp and the West Rand, we specify SABS-marked glass according to the opening, exposure, usage and safety requirements of the project. Toughened glass is often used for shower panels, frameless glass, doors, sidelights, shopfront elements and other high-use areas where strength and safe breakage matter, but it still needs correct edge quality, hardware, fixing and installation by an experienced crew.
The problem
Toughened glass is much stronger than ordinary glass, but it cannot be cut, drilled or altered after toughening. If the measurements, holes, edgework or hardware positions are wrong, the panel usually has to be remade. It also behaves differently from laminated glass, so choosing purely on strength can create the wrong result for security, sound control or overhead glazing.
